COURSE DESCRIPTION
Filmmaking is a business, and as such filmmakers must understand what it will take to successfully create and build a business. This workshop will be virtual and will last two weeks for 1.5 hours each week.
Week 1: Picking the right business idea, Finding the “pain” that your business will “kill”, Considerations when choosing a business model, Funding

Week 2: Business entities formation and critical functional areas of a business. Basic business structures.

Film in a business, and therefore it’s important to understand how to determine your business model and structure, the steps to get legally set up as a business entity and critical functional areas of a successful business such as marketing, PR, Sales, Accounting, Finance, Operations, and more. With new laws like AB-5, the need for business education for filmmakers is becoming more and more urgent.
This workshop will cover choosing what business (or film) to start, different ways to form business entities, pros and cons for each, and a step by step process to turn your passion into a legal business entity. We’ll also give a brief overview as to business functional areas and why each is invaluable to the success of a business. This workshop will be taught by Jodi Cilley, Founder and President of the Film Consortium San Diego who holds an MBA with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship.

INSTRUCTOR
This class will be taught by founder and president of the Film Consortium San Diego, Jodi Cilley.
Jodi Cilley
Jodi Cilley has an MBA with specializations with entrepreneurship and management from San Diego State University. She is also a long time filmmaker, entrepreneur and educator. She has been teaching video production since 2004 and has taught video and editing at San Diego City College, UC San Diego Extension Digital Arts Center, Platt College and the Media Arts Center San Diego. She has produced over a hundred projects including web series’, short films, TV specials, documentaries and commercial projects and recently produced Film Indiego, a 6-Part TV Series for KPBS.
She has a BS in Sociology from Boston College. As the founder and current president of the Film Consortium San Diego and the founder and producer of the annual San Diego Film Awards and San Diego Film Week, she is working to build a strong local film industry and to increase exhibition, distribution, funding and employment opportunities for local up and coming film talent.
